Who are we?

We restore sight to impoverished, blind people.

These people will never be able to afford or have cataract surgery on their own.

Cataract

Cataract is a condition where the natural lens has become brown and hazy. The operation replaces the hazy lens with a clear artificial lens, allowing the person to see and help their families again.

With the surgical technique that we have learned, MSICS (Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery), it is possible to operate efficiently and safely so that results are stable and predictable. In addition, surgery with this technique can be performed at little cost, compared to other techniques that require more sophisticated, expensive equipment. Thus, many can be operated on at low cost.

When you donate to Eye Rescue, your support goes to equipment, medicine and travel expenses. All doctors, nurses and volunteers are happy to invest their time, holidays and expertise, but we need equipment and medicines to help as many people as possible.

Eye Rescue – our mission and goals

For many years now, Eye Rescue has been travelling to different places to help as many as possible in a short action of 1-2 weeks. It helps a lot of people, but not enough to alleviate the blindness of cataracts everywhere. As many ophthalmologists around the world have not learnt this method of surgery, it is our aim to train more people in this technique so that many more can be operated on.

Eye Rescue Academy

By setting up a permanent clinic in an area of high need for cataract surgery, we can, through training local operators and ophthalmologists from around the world, get many people operated on locally – but beyond that, also get more ophthalmologists to participate and spread the technique.

The Eye Rescue Academy is planned to be set up in several places where there is a need and can be run by local ophthalmologists complemented by our international team and sponsored by Eye Rescue.

Tanzania

Eye Rescue sets up permanent eye clinic in Karatu, Tanzania

In September 2022, we established contact with Lutheran Hospital Karatu, Tanzania, to investigate the possibilities of setting up an eye clinic here where, in a huge catchment area of over 300,000 people, there is no permanent eye clinic and the nearest eye center is 250 km away.

In January and February 2023, we installed instruments collected from Danish ophthalmologists and refurbished at MMC Optical, Denmark. Despite long shipping times and difficult import conditions, most of the instruments arrived just in time for our first operation mission at Easter 2023.

Once upon a time we started an Eye Clinic / Academy on the hills of Ngorongoro in a town called Karatu. We stayed on Kifaru Coffee Farm, Shangrilla, sponsoring the local Lutheran Hospital, and therefore we founded the clinic there.
